Journalist Alex Perry explores the context to the Chibok kidnappings that inspired the global #bringbackourgirls social media campaign. Perry looks at the flawed foundations of the Nigerian state, the toxic legacy of North-South mistrust and the decades long power struggles and corruption within the ruling classes. He demonstrates that Nigeria's booming oil economy means that the government has no reason to be interested in its electorate; so great is the imbalance between the government's domestic revenues and the taxation revenues on foreign corporations . Perry interviews generals, statesmen and citizens in his quest to find out who Boko Haram really are - global terrorists inspired by Al Quaida as the Nigerian government and others claim? Perry does not think so, his research points to a much more local but no less savage agenda spawned in a perfect storm of poverty, corruption, resentment, suspicion and fundamentalism. He shows how endemic abuses of power have set Nigeria up for such an outcome, and looks at some of the work being done to try to prevent Nigeria from descending into further anarchy or becoming an irevocably failed state. First hand accounts of and interviews with victims of the violence sweeping Nigeria and some of those working to halt it are the foundation of this attempt to get as close as possible to the truth. Whilst, as one interviewee puts it, in Nigeria all truth is relative.

Though not always clearly written, Perry's essay demonstrates how Western colonialism in Nigeria helped produce the anti-Western ("Boko Haram") anger of many Nigerians.

Brilliant narrative of the unfortunate war the corrupt Nigerian state is fighting with Islamic insurgents
This was a challenging book to read because the writing was excellent, the research thorough, the story compelling, but the subject matter, oh so difficult. The challenges facing Nigeria are extensive, and the causes for Boko Haram's actions are displayed as a symptom of historical inequities. Boko Haram is a horrific organization committing unspeakable acts. The circumstances under which it could come to exist are horrific as well.
This book offers a well written thumbnail sketch of the history of Nigeria--which is a tragic history of ill-advised, shortsighted colonialism and subsequent corruption--and the emergence of Boko Haram, the Nigerian instance of radical Islam. I only wish it was longer. How often can you say that about a book about politics?
Very interesting read
After listening to the author give a radio interview, I purchased this eBook. It is a long article, not a book -- very insightful if you want to understand more about Nigeria and Boko Haram. This is top notch journalism. Alex Perry traveled all over the country and talked to a wide variety of people in gathering his information. I was particularly interested in the chapters on Lagos and Jos, both places I have visited. The writing is interesting, accessible, and avoids the platitudes of so much of the reporting on Nigeria. I will recommend this to all my friends and family who want a context for the stories they read in the news.
I caught an interview of the author on PBS radio and got interested enough to look up the book. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call it an extended essay on Boko Haram rather than a full fledged book. But he sure gives you an insight into how these people think and operate. You do not want anything to do with these fanatics (and that word is being too kind), and Alex Perry tells you why. They are merciless and ignorant and convinced they are right. An unfortunate combination for anyone who crosses their path.
It was great, used it to write a college term paper!
Though not always clearly written, Perry's essay demonstrates how Western colonialism in Nigeria helped produce the anti-Western ("Boko Haram") anger of many Nigerians.
