I'm a huge fan of short stories, regardless of genre. I love that the author is forced to tell their tale within such a limited space.This author provided a focus on imagery that is rare in this format. She creates an incredibly vivid world that draws you in and makes you feel like you're part of the story. While not at all what I was expecting, I found this to be a quick and very enjoyable read.
This ebook was recommended by a friend, and I will be watching for more work from this author.

I didn't know that you could get single stories here and I'm so happy to discover a new source! I think the short story is a disappearing art form. There are so few being written, especially about real characters and human relationships (as opposed to vampires and zombies!), that I sometimes feel alone in my admiration for the format.
I like this one. It feels a bit like one story in a series about the main character, or a slice of a novel - one that I'd like to read.
The feeling Carol has for Frannie reminded me a lot of a close friend I had long ago. She was a little older than me and when I met her, she was kind and strong, funny and always laughing. Her husband was a self-centered jackass ('scuse the language but it's the truth). He called her 'Babe' (as in 'get me a beer Babe') and their relationship seemed to be all about him. He spent most of his time and all of the money on his toys, his hobbies, his hunting trips, and occasionally on screwing other women. Over the years her sense of self worth was chipped away until she actually began to believe that she was weak and worth less. So she stayed.
Unlike the character in this story, my friend's marriage never seemed to carry the threat of violence. But the damage that kind of relationship can do is never only physical. I tried to be the supportive friend and always to help her see how valuable and strong she was and that she didn't have to settle for any less than real love and respect. But after a crisis that changed both of our lives, I slowly let her slip out of my life. We send Christmas cards. Like the character 'Carol' in this story, I'm not proud of that distance. Reading this has made me realize how much I miss her.
Though this is almost a short-short, it's moving and well-written. I would like to read more from this author.
